21 Months

21 Months

Dear Annie,

What a month this has been for you! It seems like this is another month where so much has changed, but maybe that's just every month now. You are turning into such a little girl lately, despite your relatively small stature. Some of the biggest changes for you have come at daycare - you had turned a little whinier there, so Sue decided to let you do all the "big girl" things - like nap on a mat instead of in a crib, sit at the little table to eat instead of in the high chair, and do crafts every day. You took to it immediately and apparently are so much happier now! You LOVE doing crafts and coloring at home too. This is the beginning of you starting to want to do things yourself - including walking places instead of being carried, climbing up stairs yourself always, and buckling yourself in things. You are still quick to ask for help when needed, which was a great word to add to your vocabulary!

Despite acting like a big girl so often, you have decided that there are some ways you still like to be a bit babied, and have discovered that sucking your thumb is fun ALL the time, not just in bed! Yay! That will be really fun to try to convince you to stop in a few years... Frequently if you are frustrated or tired or just feeling blah, you immediately stick your thumb in your mouth and love to snuggle with mom or dad for a bit. We do love this, finally we get some cuddles out of you! It is also really nice that you have your thumb - anytime, anywhere, if you are hurt or pissed, a bit of thumb sucking seems to make things much more tolerable. You've really done a number on your thumb, however, and I try to put cream on it when I can but unfortunately you don't allow much time for it to work before sucking your thumb again - you do know that it's an "ouchie" and will suck your pointer finger if I remind you to until the cream sinks in :) (PS - ouchie is probably one of the cutest words I've heard you say so far!)

You seem to be very into a mommy stage right now - you sometimes show a preference for me getting you in the morning, and threw a bit of a tantrum one night when I wasn't home at bedtime, which is not like you. You also have started to resist other people holding you, including but not limited to your dad and grandparents. You'll warm up to them after awhile, but in new situations, you definitely want mommy. I'm liking it for now, because I know I'll have to share you much more in a few months. New places and people are a bit overwhelming to you, especially big crowds, but if you recognize people you're happy to be there after just a few minutes.

In terms of playing, books have been at the forefront of your play time this past month - you love being read to, and now can shout out the words when I pause for several books. Your favorites this month are Tumble Bumble, I Spy, The Feelings Book, The Belly Button Book, Barnyard Dance, I am a Bunny, and Goodnight Moon, aka MOUSE. You also love to find all the animals on your blocks and show them to us - I'm always shocked, but it seems like 90% of the time, you actually know the correct animal on there! You still love playing pretend with any kitchen you come across, and with your baby. Whenever ANYONE is willing to play ring around the rosie with you, you are up for it, again and again! Outside continues to be a big favorite with you, and you can now get up all the big slides and ladders yourself at daycare with no help.

Language has seemed to explode again this month - now nearly any word we tell you, you can repeat and soon integrate into your language. There were a ton of new words this month, and you're starting to use 2 word phrases more and more, like Daddy home, more cookie (nice try!), hi (Name), etc. You also use a lot of single words in a row to express an idea, but it doesn't seem like it's an actual sentence yet. You've also started singing! It doesn't QUITE sound like a song, but especially with "happy birthday", you can make out the words - usually like "Happy... to you!" You know quite a few names now, and remember the names of your family and friends without being prompted.

One not so fun development this month is the return of you waking at night. You still sleep approximately 7:30pm to 7:30am, but about half the nights you wake up a few times crying for no explainable reason. Usually you don't require anything from us, but it's annoying. I suspect you are getting a few more teeth, but I'm not sure what is to blame. You have all 4 molars, but only 1 pointy tooth so far, so you still have a few more to go before a possible break before your last molars come in.

You also tend to get frustrated pretty easily when you are trying to figure something out if you are in a cranky mood. For example, you'll try for about a second or two to buckle something, and when it doesn't work, you yell and stomp your feet or say HELP! We're trying to help you try again and do things yourself instead of always just doing things for you and "rescuing" you right away, but it'd be nice if you learned just a BIT more patience!

Despite being quick to frustrate sometimes, you are still quite pleasant to other kids, and pretty gentle with babies. You do tend to "give" babies toys with a BIT more force than necessary, but have never shown any sign of aggression toward another kid other than glaring at them if they take or attempt to take a toy you really really want. This only happens if you REALLY love the toy - most of the time you really don't care if someone else takes a toy you have at all.

Every day your dad and I are so thankful we get to be your parents - you are filled with spunk and sass, and are so much fun to be around!

Love you!! (maybe someday you'll say it back to us!)

23 Weeks

22 Weeks, 5 Days

Compare to 23 weeks, 4 days with Annie. Also, compare to me in this exact same shirt at 24 weeks, 3 days last time... Ben thinks I look about the same, I think I look a little bigger now.

Due Date:
February 27, 2012. Starting to forget how far along I am in weeks, which was completely unthinkable last time. Especially odd considering I write these posts every week. (Note - I originally titled this post 22 weeks. I am 23 weeks. Seriously, really just can't keep up)

Weight Gain: I weighed myself at home and was up 8 pounds from pre-pregnancy. HOWEVER, I had a midwife appointment this morning, and was up 14 pounds. WTF? Thanks, scale at the midwife's office! Overall, that is consistent with how much I was up at this point in my pregnancy last time, but the difference is that I didn't gain ANYTHING until 19 weeks this time. So that's a big jump in not a lot of time! Eh, oh well. Considering I am currently enjoying a latte (not skim) and a muffin, I guess I'm not TOO concerned about it. The midwife was kind of like, huh... that's odd. Then checked for swelling, of which there is none, and said, oh well, these jumps happen sometimes and moved on. The rest of the appointment was fine - blood pressure low, baby moving all around and good strong heartbeat in the 150s.

Symptoms: Still feeling good! Definitely have the pregnancy insomnia, coupled with my normal insomnia, coupled with Annie not sleeping that well, so I'm pretty much always tired. I get a bit crampy and sore when I stay in one position for too long but nothing too bad.

What's different this time: The aforementioned forgetting how far along I am, and just not focusing on the pregnancy constantly. Again, as I've mentioned before, my belly seems just WAY bigger than I was at this point last time.

Cravings/Aversions: Eating pretty normal. Still have a sweet tooth and typically have something sweet every day which I've pretty much done since I was pregnant with Annie. No major aversions. I was even able to cook and consume an indian spiced meal which was a big lingering aversion from my first pregnancy.

Sleep: See above - not so hot.

I am loving: my boots and being able to wear them with a few maternity friendly outfits.

I miss: nothing major this week out of the ordinary.

I am looking forward to: the holidays! I love this time of year. A big "holiday" this year is my 30th birthday, on December 23rd, which I hope we'll be able to celebrate in some fashion. I'm feeling kind of lame about it and don't really want to do anything major, which is odd for me.

I'm spazzing about: just trying to figure out what we'll really need to do before this baby boy comes, and getting the motivation and energy to actually do it.

Best thing about this week: seeing my niece and nephew dig in to their PKU friendly 1st birthday cupcakes! Also, prenatal yoga finally - it felt good to get some exercise.

Milestones: None that I know of. My Baby Center email says that the baby can feel me dance now. Neat.

Movement: Lots, and definitely stronger - Ben's felt him quite a few more times but is very impatient so will only keep his hand there for like 5 seconds before moving on :)

It's a...: boy! I think that will be surreal until this kid is like 6 months old.

Exercise: OMG! Yes! I exercised in an official capacity for the first time since I was 34 weeks pregnant with Annie and went to my last prenatal yoga class. Allison and Laura accompanied me to Blooma, and it was great - definitely an "easier" yoga class, but was hard for me and I'm really sore today. It felt great to have an hour to focus on this pregnancy and my baby boy. I got a package so I'll be motivated to continue going, probably on weekend mornings since that's when I have the most energy.

Diet: I think I'll take this line off unless it becomes applicable due to gestational diabetes, because I just don't care.

Quite a year for these babies

Yesterday was my niece and newphew's first birthday party. Many of you may know the story behind these two little fighters, who were born at 29 weeks after finding out that their brother, Ian Gregory, had died in utero due to absent end umbilical diastolic flow (basically he wasn't getting enough from the placenta to grow properly). My sister-in-law wrote a beautiful post to them on her blog today, and after reading it all it is kind of shocking to remember everything that family has been through in the past year (really, more than a year, since Becca was on hospital bed rest for awhile too, and obviously triplets is a high-risk pregnancy).

And here they are today (well, yesterday) - you all saw tons of pics of them in my last post, too, of course, but they are healthy and happy babies who are doing so amazing! It's been a joy to see them grow and grow and grow this past year!

Grace and Sam eating cupcakes
They got special PKU friendly cupcakes - apparently every baby with PKU gets a low-phe cupcake mix mailed to them for their birthdays!

Big House in the Big Woods

Yes, that title is a homage to the first of the Little House on the Prairie books, among my favorites as a child that I actually re-read a few years ago. After several years of talking about taking a family vacation again, we finally got it together with Ben's whole family to actually organize it - since we are a large group (11 adults, 3 tots) we needed either a HUGE house or a resort where we could stay in a few cabins. We elected to rent a pretty good sized cabin near Hayward, Wisconsin - it worked out well!

The last time we took a family vacation was July 2008 when we went up to Ely - we were short a few boyfriends/fiances and 3 small children at that point so it was a little less hectic :) To compare - here is a family photo I found from that trip. It is kind of shocking how much older we all look. Especially those of us who are now parents :)

Reichelt family in Ely, MN

Here is our whole group now! I find this amazing that every single person is looking at the camera and looking at least mildly happy. Wow. Especially considering Annie did NOT want to pose for this photo at all.

Family + Matt & Tony

The weather ended up being pretty nice for late October, so we were able to enjoy some time outdoors even - but the vast majority of the time was spent just hanging out in the cabin, reading - and mostly cooking or baking, which was fun! All the kids were in charge of food - we used Google Docs to track who was doing what and for everyone to add their necessary ingredients to a grocery list, and then Ben went on a massive grocery trip to the little crappy store in Minong, WI - I think he overwhelmed their produce department, especially :) The amount of garlic we purchased was nothing short of astounding.

The main level of the cabin - that little booster seat was there, along with tons of other toys, a full size crib, and lots of toddler dishes - it was great, and totally unexpected!

Wine
Good thing we found a wine decanter

Cinnamon roll dough
The main thing I wanted to make this weekend was cinnamon rolls - I used this recipe from Crumbly Cookie and they seriously turned out amazing - I prepped everything the night before and just put them in the fridge before baking, as she says you can do in the recipe. Perfect!

Playing with placemats
Ben's mom made this outfit for Annie - so cute! (She was also intently setting up the placemats with "cups" for a little dinner party)

I was SO tired from sleeping in the same room as Annie and her waking up like 5x the night before, and me really not sleeping at all, so I had to take a nap while this pontoon ride was going on - looked fun though :)

Annie really enjoyed all the pine needles. Totally safe for her to play with I'm sure.

Ben reading to the kids
Ben reading to all the kiddos, some of them actually listening.

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip cookies
I also made pumpkin chocolate chip cookies - OMG amazing. Thanks to Ashley for the heads up to the recipe (a year ago - thank you starred items in Google Reader!)!

Annie enjoys this chair to sit in on her own, and also to set up and bounce her baby :) I think she helps bounce the baby at daycare, although I hope she's not QUITE so vigorous :)

Glasses
Please note this jacket/hat combo still fits and is in fact big despite me getting it for her LAST YEAR (looking at that pic, though, reminds me that it was not only big, but HUGE last year)

Joe and Annie
Every time Annie saw Joe - she would yell "JOE!!!!!!! JOE!!!!!!!!!" until he looked at her :) She does this now when we show her pics of him too - ha!

Cider and Outlander
I did a lot of this - reading Outlander and drinking cider - beautiful.

Annie cuddles with Becca
Oh this just warms my heart - Annie really does turn into such a snuggler when she's tired now! This also is pretty much identical to how Becca laid with Annie when she was a tiny newborn :) (including below so everyone can see how tiny she was.......OMG..... and soon there will be another tiny one....!)

Hanging out with Auntie Becca

Ben making soup
Ben, headphones on for some serious cooking of black bean soup - a HUGE hit with everyone, especially Annie! She ate it for like 10 meals in a row and devoured a big bowl each time.

Veggies for the soup
Threw in a bunch of CSA veggies here too - some tomatillos and parsnips
