17 Months

17 Months

Dear Annie,

More and more big changes are happening in your little world! It's crazy to me that now, when people ask how old you are, I can respond with "one and a half" - the days of quoting your age in months are over! We are away from home this week, up at your grandparents' cabin, so we finally have taken our monthly pic elsewhere!

You are a smooth little walker now, you still fall sometimes but not too often anymore. You've picked up speed, but you don't run yet - fine with me, that's for sure! You still love to climb, and playgrounds have become much more fun for you this month - you can climb up slides, and go down, and just this weekend you've figured out how to climb a short ladder after MANY attempts.

Outside is still your favorite place to be, although sometimes I think you enjoy the process of walking over doorframes, in and out, in and out, almost as much as being outside! You love picking up sticks, collecting rocks, playing in the water and just walking around. The stroller has become a favorite and you really love taking walks, pointing out things you see and hear on the way! You've become quite the interactive travel companion now!

New words continue to come out of you seemingly every day - I stopped keeping track, but I think you've probably added 10-15 words to your vocabulary this month. None of them are particularly understandable to everyone, and some sound absolutely nothing like the real word (for example, for both flower and water you say something that sounds vaguely like "da-doo") but you sure are letting us know what you're looking at! My favorite word that you learned this month was "Up!" when you want to get up somewhere - finally, something useful! You used to cling at our legs, look up, and say "dow? dow? dow????" and then when we'd say "UP?" you'd say "pup!" and now you just say "UP!" I also quite like "night night" when you want to go to sleep or when you lay down on a pillow. It's so cute to start hearing what's going on in your little head! You aren't really babbling much anymore, instead just running through all your words, or humming a little tune. Your favorite word continues to be PUPPY and you say it alllll the time, anytime you see an animal at all resembling a dog, or hear a bark in the distance.

You've started singing and dancing a little this month while walking - you bop around, sway, and shake your arms when we're singing, and you also try to sing along. You've gotten better about motions to songs, and continue to love to sing along to things like itsy bitsy spider, ring around the rosie, and this little piggy.

Family and friends are so much fun to see now - you squeal with glee and rush over to people that you recognize, such as your grandparents, aunts, uncles, and the neighbors. Still no one gets a louder scream of excitement then going over to Nate, Molly and Mia's house! When you see your friends or family in the distance, you like to shout "HEY!!!!!!!!!! HEY!!!!!!!!!!!!" at them until they turn around and wave back. This usually isn't enough, and you do this several times until you move on to the next activity.

I would be remiss if I only mentioned the fun things you are doing this month, because that wouldn't be a very accurate depiction of who you are! You have some QUITE cranky times, Miss Annie, and I have to say they are VERY frustrating to us! Some days (like today, actually) you just wake up on the wrong side of the bed, and almost nothing will turn you right again! You are full on into tantrum mode, and some days the tiniest thing will set you off, like not being able to get a lid on a jar, or having something taken away from you before you are ready. You throw yourself on the ground and kick and YELL, VERY LOUDLY! Anyone listening would surely think you are being tortured. You are getting much better about saying please nicely when asking for something, instead of grunting "EH! EH!" while reaching for it, which is very nice. We try to ignore your tantrums most of the time, but we fear someone calling Child Protective Services on us because of how loud you are! We just keep repeating "this is just a phase..." (that will probably get worse before it gets better, but oh well).

While there are some real lows of this age, the highs are even higher. I just love sharing experiences with you now, having conversations, and seeing you figure out your world. You still LOVE to eat, your favorites are any kind of fruit and carb, Mexican food, and anything in a tomato sauce. and CHEESE of course! You used to open your mouth for anything I'd try to feed you, but you now examine what I have, and shake your head no if you don't want it. NOTHING will convince you to try something you don't want, no matter how much I know that you would like it! You're very good with a spoon, and have gotten much better with a fork too, stabbing neatly instead of wildly.

Annie, I'm so excited to see you grow and change into a true toddler and little girl. You are so full of personality, and we truly do just sit and watch you with wonder most of the time!

We love you forever!

Love, Mom

Masterpiece!

Annie has scribbled with crayons and chalk before, but this was the first time she actually focused for a good 5-10 minutes and filled a piece of paper with her artwork. The next time we colored, she kept wanting to put the crayons in my hand so I'll have to stop coloring so as not to inhibit her genius :) Then she nibbled a bit off the top of the green crayon, so coloring time was over :)

Twins Game surprise!

My mom's birthday was this past week, and my sister and I decided to surprise her with tickets to a Twins game, because she had been wanting to go to the new stadium but hadn't yet. The surprise wasn't TOO tough, but there were a few roadblocks. First, my parents thought this weekend would be "too much family time" since we had my sister's graduation yesterday and were going out to lunch after that. Second, my mom actually expressed a preference for where we eat, which she usually didn't, so I had to say something about how Ben really wanted to eat at Sea Salt Eatery (the dinner was for his birthday too) because that was on the light rail and that's how we were going to get to the game. I also stressed a lot about the weather because of course it said PM T-storms. Luckily, it all worked out!

I got there from work around 5, and after Google Maps led me in the exact opposite direction of Sea Salt from the light rail, eventually I made it there. It was super hot, and we all had our zip up hoodies on over our Twins shirts so I made Liz give my mom her present right away - a Twins shirt. She was very surprised! Liz had also gone to my parents' house yesterday to get my Dad's shirt - we had a fear that he'd notice since it was at the top of his t-shirt pile, but luckily he didn't! Liz thankfully got 2 sizes for my mom and I took one because the Twins shirt I was wearing drove me nuts the entire day from being too short and digging into my neck, hence our matching shirts.

Didn't know if Annie would be into fried seafood (turns out - nope) so she enjoyed a peanut butter sandwich

After dinner, we drove up to Ben's dad's office and dropped Annie off to go down and spend the night at the grandparents (we still aren't ready to risk taking her to another game after this fiasco) and walked to the light rail!

Our seats were pretty good - the few times we went last year, we were always in the upper deck, so it was cool to sit lower this time. As usual, I focused more on eating and walking around than watching the game.

After the game was over, we waited in a huge crowd for the light rail and rode on a packed car - got to the cars JUST as it started to rain! It was a really fun night, and I'm so glad we pulled off the surprise!

Yes, more photos

I feel like nearly every post I write is just a little recap of our weekends with a ton of photos. Oh well. This one won't even be that great, since I was managing Annie by myself while Ben biked the MS150 and didn't bring my nice camera anywhere. Yet another shout out to my iPhone 4- that camera on there really is pretty good! (outdoors at least) Lately, I keep thinking about last summer at this time, and how different Annie was then - it is mind blowing how much these kids can change in a year at this age! Last year, I was totally freaked out to watch Annie on my own for the first time. I should have been more freaked out this year - this child can be exhausting!! Last year her big accomplishment was learning to roll over from back to belly - but then she stopped. So yeah. Taking a shower becomes a little harder to manage now! Kudos to all you stay at home moms that do this every day. It's not HARD necessarily, but by naptime and bedtime, I was pretty much spent.

Just one video - I've taught Annie how to "cheers" - she's a big fan.

Neighbor Nate just sent me a few really cute photos from last weekend - I LOVE them. Annie loves Nate with all of her heart, so he's always good to get some great facial expressions from her.

As I've done the last 2 MS150 weekends, we spent Saturday with Rebekah and Adelaide. Met up for breakfast at Zumbro Cafe with them, as well as Abby and Mindy - lots of Tiny Diner Placemats on that table :)

Sharing with Abby
Sharing - but only as long as food was also in her mouth. She had a half banana before we left, then a bunch of graham crackers, cheerios, an entire pancake, berries, and some of Adelaide's banana. I truly do not know where she puts it all sometimes.

We then walked down to Wild Rumpus bookstore, which was super cute, but probably a little old for the girls now. I think it'll be really fun when Annie's around 4 and up! Tons of random animals all over the place, and lots of fun things for kiddos to play with.

From there, we walked (at first, in the wrong direction - oops! My fault) to a playground near Lake Harriet. It was definitely a beautiful day, and the girls had a great time.

Annie was all tired out, but somehow her 15 minute nap in the car made her think she was done with naps for the day. She rolled around in her crib for an hour, then I tried to have her nap with me for 35 minutes. No dice. She was very cuddly and nice, but not sleeping. I put her back in the crib and she finally fell asleep around 3. Whatever. Since neither Rebekah or I had plans that evening, we decided to meet up again and went to Punch Pizza for dinner, and then to the playground featured in my last post!

Annie kept leaning back in her chair, so Adelaide would imitate her. She also kept trying to give Adelaide her pizza, who would then say, "no thank you, I have mine" - so cute :)

On Sunday morning, we headed over to Allison's house, because MJ had been asking for Mia and Annie all day. In true toddler form, once we got there, they all mostly ignored each other :)

Entranced by a Sesame Street clip while she got a little manicure
I always put on a Sesame Street clip on youtube while I cut Annie's nails (usually Feist which I find hilarious) and Annie sits there, slack jawed, for the entire length of the video. She is usually breathing really heavy too. Glad she really doesn't watch that much tv, because that's not so attractive :)

On Sunday, I was really sad to not be able to go to the finish line at the MS150 as I've done the last 2 years. My family was having a gathering, since we didn't all get together at Christmas due to my sister's wedding. It was really fun to see everyone! I have many cousins, and lots of them have kids, so there were kids there ranging from 2 weeks old up to.... 12 years old maybe is the oldest? Annie had a blast playing with everyone. Thankfully she napped on the way there (my aunt and uncle's house is over an hour away) so I didn't need to deal with her napping there.

Annie was a bit weirded out to see her Dad after we got home from the party - she had just woken up. She quickly warmed up to him though, thankfully.

I will close this post with a few random photos I took of the neighbor girls on Monday - they are just so funny right now! Always grabbing toys from each other, and seriously whenever they see food? (Especially Annie) They are VULTURES! It's sad, and at the same time, hilarious.

Sliding

So, as you may have guessed, Annie is a bit of a cautious child. This is absolutely awesome in terms of my blood pressure and confidence in her ability to NOT crack her head open.

When we are at playgrounds or really anywhere, we try hard to not help her out with anything - she does what she has the ability to do, and no more. It seems much safer to me, and on the occasions that we HAVE helped her up somewhere, it's become obvious that she gets a bit overconfident and then either wants us to do it for her all the time (super annoying) or ends up hurting herself. For example - going down the slide - a few times, we'd put her up at the top and hold her on the way down. The few times we hadn't been there to hold her, her head flew back and hit the slide, or she climbed up to the top of the big playground and threw herself headfirst down the slide, getting a nice mouthful of dirt at the bottom. Lovely! Same with stairs - we haven't been helping her on stairs, ever, so she seems to be PRETTY good about going up and down in a way that is safe. Here's hoping she continues that trend!

Anyway, we visited a playground with Rebekah and Adelaide this weekend that was perfectly Annie sized - she could climb up to the top of the slide herself and since she got herself up there, I decided to not help her and see how she did going down on her own.

Observe - (spoiler alert - she DOES eventually go down each time) try #1 was a bit rocky - I was worried she would start crying because she kind of hits her head on the side of the slide, but she jumped up and went back for more so I guess she was okay!

Try number 2. This one is super long. Whoa. She maybe was a bit gun shy from hitting her face the time before.

Finally, 3rd time is a charm - only at the top for 30 seconds this time, versus 2 MINUTES!

I find her caution kind of hilarious, especially when compared with other kids her age. Blogger friend Kristal's son is just a few days older, and you can see his very different behavior on a slide here :) It's really not surprising, given that I refused to go on the KIDDY roller coaster at Valleyfair until I was nearly too tall for it (um, that thing is not scary by the way. very tame. Obviously). I also got up to a 5 foot "cliff" in Hawaii and refused to jump off into the water because I was too scared, instead climbing back down the long way. So HOPEFULLY, Annie takes after me and will continue to be cautious, but I know she might gain some confidence and start climbing and being a daredevil any day now.... I'm hoping for no on that one though!

Tres Leches Cake

Such an exciting life I lead. While I DID go to a party earlier tonight, due to toddler bedtime, I was home by 8pm. Watched a few episodes of Modern Family, and was perusing the archives of my blog to try to remember life pre-kid. I do miss the days of long involved dinners, and food photography that took more than one second!

For our family barbecue this Sunday, I decided to make a dessert for Ben's birthday that he's been requesting ever since we ate at 112 Eatery - Tres Leches Cake. A bonus was that he actually hadn't asked about it in awhile, so he was even surprised!

I used the recipe from Pioneer Woman, and it all went really well. I was a bit nervous since it required beating egg whites, and my last attempt at that was a big fat failure. Since then, I have avoided recipes that require that. Now I have conquered my fear, and the baking world is my oyster!

Everyone seemed to think this cake was delicious but me - so I'm not sure if they were just being polite, or what. The milk mixture just didn't seem sweet enough - I'm not sure if I used too much evaporated milk/cream in the mixture and not enough sweetened condensed milk - who knows. The recipe just calls for "one can" of each, not specific amounts. I still happily ate the piece I had, but it was not nearly as good as the cake at 112 Eatery. Ben enjoyed it, so that's all that matters to me!

This is when it became obvious that our house and oven are not level. Good thing that didn't really matter with this cake at all :)
