13 Months

13 Months

Dear Annie,

You have already finished the first month of your 2nd year, and it was a big one, as usual! We took our first big family vacation, and you loved the sand and the sun and the pool, and spending a whole week with some of your favorite people - Fruncle Nate, Frauntie Molly and Mia! We have been busy pretty much this whole month with visits to various friends and relatives - we like to keep you on your toes, baby girl.

Sometimes I start to think that you aren't developing fast enough, or doing enough things, and then I actually write it all out and I realize just how much you have changed in a month, and how much you are doing every day! So I'm sorry if sometimes I don't seem excited enough for what you are doing right now, or if I seem like I want you to be doing anything more. That is something I'm trying to get better about, and I want you to know - whatever you are doing right now is perfect!

Here is a little bit about what you have been up to this month. You love to bop around to music - you wiggle your hips back and forth when you're sitting, and bounce up and down if you're standing. You also love to make your own music with your maracas, or by pounding anything on a table or floor. Any toy that makes music you push buttons again! and again! to make the songs start.

If you aren't paying attention, you will stand up on your own. Until you realize that you aren't holding on, and you slowly lower yourself to the ground! I've seen you stand by yourself for 20-30 seconds, so you are definitely improving your balance! You are also almost to getting yourself to standing on your own. You get up to kneeling on one knee with one foot out and get a little stuck there so far. You've become a climber this month - you love your new chair and climb in and out, and in and out. You also have been trying to climb up higher things like the couch and your high chair but thankfully you haven't figured that out just yet. When in your chair, you like to make sure you have a few toys in your hands before you get up - usually your baby doll's spoon and bowl that you stir around and pretend to eat.

You walk around furniture pretty quickly now, and will walk with a push toy. Unfortunately, we don't have one of those for you and even if we did, there's not many places for you to push it around in our tiny house, so you'll just have to practice that one elsewhere! You are getting a lot better about walking between furniture without sitting down first.

We are loving that you are becoming so much more interactive - sometimes you will try to mimic our sounds and movement. We still play peek-a-boo, and you love to clap and will sometimes clap your cheeks too when you get really excited. You love to mimic when I make kissy sounds, and are also starting to get more affectionate with open mouth kisses and even some hugs! You hug your stuffed animals and dolls more than us so far, though :)

While you don't stick your pointer finger out, you gesture to everything all the time, and usually exclaim "Doh!" or "Digga!" while doing it - it is getting a little easier to understand what you want because you clearly reach toward it, however sometimes we can't give you those things, like my glasses, or the glass spice bottles. You then get more than a little frustrated! It seems like you are getting more frustrated by your inability to communicate exactly what you want this month.

You still babble up a storm, and still have a few word-like sounds, but nothing very consistent yet. The closest thing to a word I've heard is still hi and bye bye. You have lots of inflection and make many different noises which are always entertaining to us!

In the past few months, you've started really recognizing friends and family members, which I know they all love! You break out in a HUGE grin when you see your grandparents, aunts and uncles and close friends - especially Fruncle Nate and Frauntie Molly - you literally SCREAM with delight when we are walking up to their house and will bounce around uncontrollably when we go into their house. This is no shock since Mia does have all the cool toys and you love to play with them!

You are still pretty laid back about playing. If another kid takes something from you, you don't mind at all, you just quickly move on to something else. It's when an adult takes something that you aren't supposed to have, like a phone, when you might get upset!

Just in the past few weeks, you've been laying down a lot on the floor as if you are going to bed. You'll sometimes do it when we ask if you're going night night, or if there is a pillow around. Just today I saw you throw yourself to the ground tantrum-like for the first time. Not so cute!!

Books are starting to get more interesting to you - you will hand your dad and I a book, especially your favorites Kisses and Tails. Other than those 2, you might listen to 2-3 pages of the book before you're on to something else. I usually keep reading just in case :)

All month long, your sleep has still been broken up with some crying, usually 1-2 times a night. We still aren't sure why, but I hope you grow out of that soon! You still sleep from 7pm-7am, and take one nap from 1-3pm. Sometimes that schedule varies a little, but that seems to be what you prefer!

We stopped nursing completely this month, just a week ago. This was a harder change on me than it was on you! I will so miss that time we had to cuddle before work and before you went to bed. I did love holding you close and feeling your soft skin and hair. Sometimes you will allow me to cuddle you for a minute here and there now, but it's not the same! You didn't seem to mind at all, and within a few days started drinking much more whole milk from your sippy cup, which you have with meals. You've definitely done great, and haven't seemed to miss your bedtime nursing session at all, and in fact seem even more excited to go to bed than you did when we were nursing - you won't even listen to Goodnight Moon anymore, and are instead whining and REACHING for the crib as soon as we walk in there!

You did get one more tooth this month, bringing your total to 7 -4 on the top, 3 on the bottom. There's still tons of drool going on, so I'm thinking more are on the way.

Not that your lack of teeth hold you back from eating at all - you LOVE food. It is your favorite thing. When you are cranky, a snack is a pretty surefire way of calming you down. If you see a snack cup, you have it in your hands and NOTHING inspires your wrath more than if someone dares to take it away from you! Your dad and I get a huge kick out of watching you eat something you love - you shovel food in your mouth so fast, as if we might take it away. You grab a huge handful, and try to get it all in, and go back for more super fast. You will try anything, and if you don't like it, you just open your mouth and let it fall out, like you did with some horseradish carrots and honeydew melon this past weekend. You also love to feed your dad and I - if we come close to you, you'll hold out some food for us and feed us. It's a conflict for you if it's something you really like, such as cheese - sometimes you will put it in our mouth, then take it out and eat it yourself :) We've started giving you a spoon or fork with meals, and you're pretty good with them - it takes you a super long time, but you've figured out how to poke at things with the fork and get it to your mouth - getting it off the fork is a bit tougher for you, but you've done it a few times now. You still far prefer your hands though.

We're still trying to figure out your personality - you're usually pretty content, but you have your moments of crankiness, that's for sure! You can be laid back, but also very stubborn and independent. On the whole, you are a barrel of fun - almost always happy and you really just get cuter every day. One thing is for sure - we do just love being your parents, every step of the way!

Playa del Carmen - Day 4 - February 8th

**Editor's note: I am really having some trouble remembering what we did each day beyond the basics - so really these are mostly just going to be photos! Turns out when you basically lay around for a week, the days blend together. However, I took far too many photos for one post so will continue with the daily posts**

As soon as Annie and Mia finished their breakfast on this day, we got ready to head to the beach again. It was kind of cloudy, which makes photos slightly easier. This is also the day that I realized that the pajamas I got on clearance for Annie because I needed some non-fleece footie pjs were actually Christmas themed :) Oops!

Another cute outfit - this one was a bday present from Molly because she loves seeing Annie's chunky thighs is leggings :)

Annie really loved getting sunscreen put on

Here are just a small selection of the 8 million photos I took on the beach that day - some of my faves from the entire trip! When I dumped my memory cards after this trip, I had taken over 2 THOUSAND PHOTOS - a new record, probably. Well, except for our Europe trip. But for a week in the same place? That's pretty impressive... I managed to edit them down to 1,184 total, so just wanted to make you aware that I actually did delete about 40% of the pics I took :)

We got back from the beach and just hung out for a bit before the girls went down for their nap. This was the day that was featured in Nate's time lapse video of naptime, so if you watched that, you get the idea :) Lounging, Ben cooking, and all of us eating.

After nap, we loaded the girls up and walked into town for some ice cream. I remember being very irritable during this trip into town for some reason. I'm sure it was a really big deal. Oh I remember now - I was dealing with trying to purchase feminine supplies for the first time in 21 months. I mean, really. What are the fricking chances?! Anyway, the gelato was good, but quite overpriced and the people there had no change for me so I had to sit there while they dug money out of the tip jar (which was locked) so yeah, kind of annoying overall.

Going into the cigar shop
Ben gets way too big of a kick out of taking Annie shopping for things like cigars...

Since we finally had a fixed stove, we made some spaghetti for dinner. The girls loved it. It was another low key night of sitting on the patio listening to the rain while enjoying some beverages and listening to music.

Updates

I'm feeling sad about the lack of weekly posts. I take so many random pictures, where am I to share them now?! So thus, an "updates" post... not really a weekly post, but kind of. We hung out with the neighbors last weekend and I took some cute/hilarious photos of the girls so I just wanted to share them...

2 snack cups!
Annie seriously cannot be in the presence of snack cups without going bonkers. If you take them away, watch out! So, she found both and hoarded them.

Weaning is going okay. Wed-Thurs were pretty much unbearable in terms of pain. On Monday, I stopped at the grocery store and picked about 30 outer leaves of cabbage off - I don't THINK anyone noticed. I used these all week. Sometime in the middle of the night on Thursday, I noticed that I could kind of tolerably sleep halfway on my stomach again, so the actual pain was getting better but definitely still engorged. I took a decongestant every single night as well. Someone on twitter recommended claritin, so I tried that on Friday. I also munched altoids since mint is supposed to reduce milk supply. I did end up pumping just to take the edge off last night so I could enjoy my night out. I don't think the engorgement is over for me yet, sadly.

Lounging
Annie loves to lounge in her chair - also, this is how I justified buying outfits for Mexico - because they can all be worn with leggings and a long sleeved onesie underneath!

Uncle Ben, Aunt Erin and little Sam
Ben and I watched Sam and Grace on Tuesday so Becca and Joe could have a date night. After feeding Sam just once, I have newfound respect for all of them!

Annie's reaction to weaning has been no reaction at all - which is good of course, but I was sort of hoping she'd miss it at least a little. She has been a little clingier to us lately, but I think that's more just her age and being in the throes of separation anxiety. She's even started crying when Ben leaves daycare and she used to not even give him a second glance. Thankfully, she's also drastically increased her milk intake this week - I was beginning to think it was a lost cause and she just wouldn't be a big milk drinker, but by yesterday she actually drank 3 full sippy cups of milk all day - way to go, Annie! She still has been randomly screaming at night, every night - thankfully usually before we go to bed, but almost always at least one time after we go to bed too. I put a stuffed bunny in her crib in case she was.... uh, lonely I guess? But she just ignores it. I have no clue what's up with her and sleeping lately. Which is a pretty good summary of 90% of the issues in parenting, as my blog friend A. pointed out :)

Bath time
Getting a wee bit big for this towel

In other Annie updates, she has been getting pretty close to standing independently. She'll pull up and let go for a few seconds now before sitting back down or grabbing something again. She also pulls up with very little support now. She stays standing even longer if she doesn't realize what's going on - Ben said she stood by the fridge for about 15 seconds this morning, which is far far longer than I've ever seen. A few times I've seen her take one step but it's really just a movement that causes her to fall more than an actual step :) I find it kind of hard to actually get excited about this... at this point, it's like, ok it's time to walk now, so get on with it, kid. So mean of me, I know! But it is true that it's easier to get legitimately excited about milestones when they are met on the early end of the spectrum. I'm certainly not concerned about it, and not going to push her to walk or anything - I see she's progressing at her own pace so that's just grand. I'm just kind of ready for her to be walking - then she can wear jeans easier, and also dresses - and we all know how excited I get about cute little girl clothes :) Too bad it doesn't matter at all if I'M ready - ha!

Last night, I had a girls night with my college roommates - our first night away since we all started having kids. We planned to do a bigger trip this fall but that's looking sketchy in terms of future planned pregnancies for several of us, so we decided that while those of us here are able to, we should go out NOW! We got a hotel room in downtown St. Paul, went to Barrio for dinner, and then out to the uber trashy Alary's where we ended up becoming close friends with the owner. It was a really fun night, even though at 5am I was SERIOUSLY considering calling a cab to just go home instead of listening to 4 of my friends wheeze/snore. I was always the person at sleepovers that just left at midnight instead of actually sleeping over. Then I found some earplugs and was out until 9:30.

Girls night 2011!
Mindy got us all wine glasses with our initial on it - so cute!

Although Ben and I have been away from Annie for a night, this was the first time Ben has been alone with Annie for a night. I guess it was fine - he went to his parents house this morning to visit his aunt who is in town, and then stayed all day through Annie's nap, and we met at my parents house for dinner since I was in the area for a bridal shower. Ben knows that I appreciate pics throughout the day, so I got about 6 pics emailed before they even left this morning, including one that you can all be thankful I'm not sharing of her with snot covering her face, which is how she always wakes up when she has a cold :)

Ruffle butt
Oh, love the ruffles. Thankfully we have this outfit in 2 colors :)

Playa del Carmen - Day 3 - February 7th

On our 3rd day, we planned to go out to breakfast - Molly had looked up some places the night before, so as soon as we were all up and ready, we walked to the condos down the road from our house because there were always taxis there, and took a taxi to La Cueva del Chango, since it was on the far north side of town and way too long of a walk.

Another cute little shirt, this one from Aunt Becca!

We got to the restaurant fairly early, and it was pretty full of families. They had tons of high chairs, which was awesome, and they were actually well made and safe, unlike the other ones we used. It is a beautiful place, set among trees and open to the outside. The food was really great too! I had french toast which was served with butter and plum marmelade, Ben had chilaquiles, and we got an order of the oatmeal with fresh fruit and milk for the girls to share. Annie decided she had no interest in the oatmeal though, and only wanted my french toast. Of course! I LOVED this restaurant, and would highly recommend checking it out if you are in Playa del Carmen.

We hung out at the restaurant and enjoyed a leisurely meal. After that, we walked to the beach to check it out for a bit and then parted ways so Molly and I could go supplement the groceries we had with another trip and the boys could go back to the house with the girls.

Nate told me the previous day how to get that sunburst effect (put the aperture at f/22) so I became a liiiitle obsessed with trying it out :)

Clearly very impressed

Based on the poor experience at Wal-Mart on day 1, we elected to go to MEGA instead, which was a very good decision. It was, indeed, MEGA, and had a lot of English signage. We were there for awhile and tried to make good decisions in terms of what would go with what, but again, should have planned more. Oh well!

When we got back, the girls were both in the pool - well, Annie was in her floaty, and Nate was trying to entice Mia to enjoy the pool, but still no luck there. Her loss! I don't remember anything noteable from this day really. The girls took naps, we hung out..... This is why I need to journal or something on trips, because clearly even a week later I can't remember anything! I did post on twitter some, so at least I have that. So from that, I remember that my trusty 50mm f/1.8 lens broke this day :( It was a sad state of affairs, and I still haven't examined it closely, but it appears that the focus ring detaches from the rest of the lens completely. Nate has a 50mm f/1.4 that he let me borrow, so I wasn't 50mm-less the rest of the trip, thankfully.

I do know that we again stayed in tonight - cooking up something again that didn't require the stove because it hadn't gotten fixed yet. It was some combination of ground beef, refried black beans, cheese, peppers..... that actually ended up being quite good. Ben, Nate and Molly had all been enjoying the adult beverages all day, so they were in bed at like 9pm. I've found that if I have even a few, my sleep just sucks so I didn't have anything and was awake reading after they were all down for the count - again, SUCH an exciting bunch we are!
