The morning and early afternoon consisted of just playing in the pool, walking to the beach and lounging. This was Nate and Molly's date night, so they made sure their reservation at Playasia was confirmed. I had emailed for a reservation at the same time, but hadn't heard back, so I also emailed again about it for our date night the following night. Turned out to be a waste of time, as you will hear about in Day 6's post...

I blocked Annie with the chair, and found the perfect angle so most of my body was in the sun while she was still in the shade :)

We had a little friend who lived near the road to our house

Lots of people out for walks on the beach

Trying to keep the girls in the shade- Mia wasn't too interested

Once we got them both in lower buckets, it was all good :)
I was super tired, so decided to try to take a nap with Annie. Previous attempts at this have been failures, but I figured I didn't have much to lose since we didn't have any plans later that would be ruined if she was cranky. After a bit of rolling around and some whining, she did fall asleep, and I did too for a bit! Then I woke up, and was bored... so when Ben peeked in on us, I made him switch spots with me - managed to creep out of bed and for him to get in without disturbing Annie - her cold must have made her zonk out, since usually she'll wake up after 45 minutes and stare at us in wonder and not go back to sleep. Ben was a little annoyed at me, but ended up crashing and sleeping for another hour so it all worked out for everyone :)
The weather was perfectly sunny at that point, so Molly and I headed to the beach for a bit so I could do more beer photoshoots :)
When Annie woke up, Ben and I loaded her up so we could do happy hour somewhere in town before we had to be back to watch Mia for Nate and Molly's night out. We walked around a market and ended up buying Annie a little maraca for $1 as well as a Christmas ornament, which I try to remember to buy for each of our big trips. At least I think I bought one. Now I'm not remembering and who knows where it is... I guess I'll find out next December :) I had visions of finding this bar we visited when we went to Playa del Carmen in 2007, and the only thing I could remember at the time was that it was near the hotel Playa Maya - I found where that was and we walked along the beach (no easy feat with the stroller) and came to Fusion, which was slightly renovated but we recognized as the spot!
They have low tables in the sand, and the chairs are practically lounge chairs, so it was really comfy to sit. We had Annie in her stroller but that was clearly not going to work, so we ended up just letting her get all messy in the sand. She had drool and snot all over herself by this point so a little sand was the least of our concerns :) The weather had taken a turn for the worse, with the clouds rolling in and the wind picking up so we knew our time was limited without any sprinkles. We ordered fruity drinks right away and waited a bit to order dinner while listening to the band do a very very long sound check. We again ordered Annie a cheese quesadilla, I got the salmon bagel sandwich (kind of odd, but I just can't resist anything with cream cheese) and Ben got a tuna melt. Of course right as we got our food, the rain started, so we quickly moved indoors! Annie was not really in good spirits at all by this point, and didn't want to eat anything, so we scarfed down our meals and I ate part of her quesadilla just so it wasn't a TOTAL waste, and we left. The food and drinks at Fusion were really good, and there was live music which was fun.
Luckily the rain let up for our walk home. We got in and immediately gave Annie a much needed bath, and took over watching Mia while Nate and Molly finished getting ready and left for their date night! We put the girls to bed and went outside in the pouring rain again - this time it was a bit too windy to even stay out there. Nate and Molly came home a little early because they didn't feel like walking around town in the rain, but had a wonderful dinner at Playasia!

LOOK at the color of the water! Oh how gorgeous. Sand in her toes!
Were you guys nervous about taking Annie to Mexico? I know that there has been some unrest and issues in their government in the last year or so... I just heard someone I am acquainted with cancelled their trip to Mexico because of this... I have no idea where they were going... and I don't watch CNN enough to even vaguely know what they were talking about.
We did know about the unrest in Mexico, and it's actually been going on for a few years now. Almost all is drug related, and is pretty concentrated in certain areas not close to Playa del Carmen.
We weren't worried about it at all just because we knew that the issues in Mexico were not targeted toward tourists at all and hadn't been reported in that area. Mexico is a huge country, and if we had cancelled our trip, it would be like choosing not to go to Seattle because of a crime outbreak in Detroit. We did always make sure to lock the house when we were gone or sleeping and weren't ever wandering around side streets after dark - typical precautionary things you should be doing anywhere!
God those beers look good right now.
Erin - great vacation posts! Looks like you guys had such an amazing time. It seriously makes me want to jump on a plane to warmer weather NOW!
God damn feet
